My greatest muse in art has always been the horse, even from some of my earliest days. A creature of great grace and beauty, power and character. Coupled with my love of the sport of horseracing, I find no greater subject to portray.
And I believe the greatest compliment can be paid in oils. The richness of this medium allows the depiction of true depth and colour. While painting techniques can capture the fine detail and honesty of the subject.
Here are a selection of my paintings on various surfaces, from canvas (both linen and cotton), to board and paper.
I work in varying sizes from the small standards through to life-sized.

As with much of my artwork, my approach to portraiture is much influenced by classicalism. While portraits must confirm to the important aspects of likeness, tone and character. I also like to express a play of light in paintings, using warm and dark tones to best represent the sitter.
Portraits can be so much more than just a likeness. They are used to express the sitters personality. With paintings showing a array of collections, hobbies and distinctions amongst other things.
I hope to ever develop my portrait work, with pieces branching into history painting and conversation pieces.
I work all sizes from small traditional to life sized. And many surfaces from canvas (linen and cotton), to board and paper.

When depicting man’s best friend, one must always show the greatest respect. Pets come in all shapes, sizes and breeds and when asked to paint them you must try to see them as their owners do. Giving them character, a sense of place and honour.
Whether painting working dogs or doted upon pets, the importance of capturing the essence and nobility of the subject is paramount. I like to sit these portraits in appropriate backgrounds, again inclining toward a classical approach. But if a more modern aspect is suited, having the flexibility to represent this.

My first introduction into art was through an appreciation of its classical past. From prints of famous works such as, The Haywaine, Red Boy and Blue Boy. I grew up fascinated by the traditions of art. My admiration grew to encompass the works of the 18th century through to the beginnings of the 20th.
My great interest in history and military history introduced me to the very influential works of the likes of David, Gros, Lawrence, Gainsborough, Van Dyck, Canaletto and Ingres but to name a few. While my love of horses introduced me to the likes of Herring, Stubbs, Agasse and many more.
I believe there is a great deal to be learnt from the masters of the past, for their greatest works are their greatest gifts to us, artist and art lovers alike. We can learn from them and progress ourselves.
In my learning process I have tried to paint in the style of many of my favourite artists to better understand art itself. This includes reproducing some famous works as well as producing my own work in a very classical/traditional style.

In the genre of Still Life my wish is to represent in art a selection of beautiful objects. Finely finished and realistically composed to give the impression of beauty, elegance and realism.
And while still life objects can be added as part of a larger composition to add influence, suggestion and even hidden messages, it is nice to present these objects in their own light. Allowing them to shine and tell a story all their own.
And I believe story telling and conversation pieces are a great way of depicting this genre. Small and beautiful, large and bold or simply realistically touchable. I find still life a fascinating and very telling subject.

The Drawings gallery covers my work in both pencil and charcoal and chalk. This section includes works in all the subjects that are covered in the painting galleries.
I like the simple way that very few colours can make such a great impact. My aim is to produce depth and detail as well as a likeness of subject.
I work on both white and coloured paper as well as pastel board in all colours.
Work is available in a range of sizes.

Many of my landscapes are those set as the backdrops of my work. This page is dedicated to purely landscape and scene paintings.
My aim is to depict the landscape in a classical sense, highlighting tones and using light to create a mood. I hope to make my landscapes more than just a likeness by adding a sense of place and time.
This page also includes paintings of buildings and structures, some in sketch format in their own right or as a guide for future paintings.
I work in may sizes and surfaces, including canvas (linen and cotton) to board and paper.
