When depicting man’s best friend, one must always show the greatest respect. Pets come in all shapes, sizes and breeds and when asked to paint them you must try to see them as their owners do. Giving them character, a sense of place and honour.
Whether painting working dogs or doted upon pets, the importance of capturing the essence and nobility of the subject is paramount. I like to sit these portraits in appropriate backgrounds, again inclining toward a classical approach. But if a more modern aspect is suited, having the flexibility to represent this.
I work in all sizes from small traditional to life sized. And on many surfaces from canvas (linen and cotton) to board and paper.
